History of Neighborhood

photo of Battery Park City Its rich history dates back to the 17th century when it served as a defensive fortification to protect the city against naval attacks. It was named after the artillery batteries that were stationed there. The Dutch established the settlement of New Amsterdam and this time Battery Park first served as a defensive position, equipped with cannons to protect the burgeoning settlement.

As the settlement grew and transformed into the bustling city of New York, Battery Park continued to play a crucial role in its history. In 1625, the Dutch constructed Fort Amsterdam at the park's site, serving as both an administrative center and a military stronghold. However, the British captured New Amsterdam from the Dutch in 1664, renaming it New York, and subsequently took control of the fort.

Over the years, Battery Park witnessed numerous significant events, including the waves of immigrants arriving at nearby Ellis Island, the construction of the iconic Statue of Liberty, and the transformation of the surrounding area into a thriving commercial and cultural hub. Today, Battery Park stands as a testament to the city's past, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and heritage that shaped New York City into what it is today.
