History of Neighborhood

photo of Roosevelt Island Roosevelt Island, formerly known as Welfare Island, has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries. The island was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Canarsie and the Matinecock, who used it for fishing and farming.

In the early 17th century, European settlers arrived in the area, and the island became part of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. It was later passed on to the British, who renamed it Blackwell's Island after a prominent landowning family. Over the years, the island served various purposes, including as a quarantine station during outbreaks of diseases like yellow fever.

In the 19th century, Blackwell's Island became the site of several important institutions. The New York City Lunatic Asylum, Penitentiary, and Smallpox Hospital were all established there. These institutions operated for many years, but conditions were often harsh and overcrowded, leading to calls for reform.

In the 20th century, the island underwent significant transformations. In 1921, it was renamed Welfare Island to reflect its growing role as a place for hospitals and charitable institutions. The iconic Renwick Smallpox Hospital, designed by renowned architect James Renwick Jr., was left abandoned but still stands as a historic landmark.

In 1973, the island was renamed Roosevelt Island in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The island's residential development began in the 1970s, with the construction of high-rise apartment buildings. Today, Roosevelt Island is a thriving residential community with a mix of housing options and a strong sense of community.

Throughout its history, Roosevelt Island has evolved from a Native American fishing ground to an institutional hub and, finally, a residential neighborhood. Its past is a testament to the enduring spirit of the island and its ability to adapt and transform with the changing times.
