Built by Louis F. Heinecke for Ernest H. Friedrichs, this Renaissance Revival six-story loft building was constructed in 1891. Mr. Friedrichs was a manufacturer of artists' materials, and he used this unit as his private office. The adjacent courtyard served as a lumber yard. The building was converted to a movie theatre in 1910, and later converted to a boutique cooperative, uniquely comprised of 3 buildings surrounding 2 common courtyards.

140 Sullivan Street is one of Soho's oldest artist-founded cooperatives, yet is not an A.I.R. building. Ideally located on the quieter, western side of Soho, in close proximity to Greenwich Village and the West Village, it is also convenient to all transportation, and to the best dining and shopping amenities downtown has to offer.
